Celiac Disease

Why Avoiding Gluten Alone...is not enough!

Check out one of Dr. Paul's Patient, Joslin's video:

Summary: In this video Joslin shares her journey with celiac disease, which began with a diagnosis at age 15 following severe symptoms including intense stomach pain, nausea, and fatigue. Despite being told that "a gluten-free diet would resolve her issues," her symptoms persisted and worsened over the years, significantly impacting her athletic lifestyle, social relationships, and overall quality of life.

After unsuccessful attempts to find solutions, including being disappointed by the Mayo Clinic, Joslin turned to Dr. Paul Deglmann, DC, DACNB, FACFN, at Restorative Health Solutions as a last resort. Through his comprehensive approach, which included specialized testing, dietary changes, and gut microbiome analysis, Joslin experienced a dramatic transformation within six months!
As someone who has personally overcome celiac disease, Dr. Paul understands that simply eliminating gluten isn't always enough. If you're still experiencing symptoms despite maintaining a strict gluten-free diet, schedule your complimentary 15 minute phone call with Dr. Paul, to take back control of your gut health.

*2025 UPDATE: Four years later, Joslin continues to feel healthy, has gained a better understanding of her body's triggers, and has even pursued a career in the industry, now advocating for others to seek similar functional medicine approaches to treating celiac disease!

Conversation between Joslin and Dr. Paul:

Joslin: I was diagnosed with celiac disease when I was 15. I was feeling a lot of stomach discomfort, a lot of stomach pain. It almost felt like knives in my stomach, very intense abdominal distention. It even got to the point where I was very, very nauseous and very fatigued where I couldn't even get throughout the day without taking a nap. I had an upper endoscopy and the doctor took a couple biopsies, found out it was positive for celiac. So after that, pretty much was just sent off.

Eat a gluten-free diet and you'll be great. You'll be fine. All these symptoms will go away.

And that was just not the case at all. All I knew was I can't eat gluten. I didn't really know also all the other different layers of celiac disease and all of that.

A couple years after that, my symptoms started to progress more and my pain continued. The stomach pain continued where it was very, very painful. It almost felt like you could pop my stomach with a needle or something like a balloon.

Tried to get into the Mayo Clinic and they kind of told me that we can't help you here. So it was very scary knowing that I was kind of living my life in pain. It had a huge impact on my life and not even my life, but also my friends and family's lives as well.

I grew up a very athletic person. I was always in sports growing up, multiple different sports, and I still love being very active and everything. But when my health was kind of at the worst that it had been at, I was not being active because my stomach hurt so much.

I kind of was bedridden for most days. Majority of the weeks I was bedridden, which looking back, that's no way to live life. But also it significantly impacted my social life.

I felt more secluded. I didn't want to be social knowing that I wasn't going to enjoy social events just because I was going to be in pain the entire time. And also too, I mean, when you're feeling the abdominal discomfort, the last thing you want to do is put on a cute outfit and be in a social setting when you don't really feel as comfortable and confident in your body as maybe you used to be.

So it put some strains on my family and friends as well. I mean, it's definitely not fun when you have a daughter, a sister, a friend always complaining about having stomach pain, and it can definitely take away some of the joys of life. But yeah, so it definitely did have a big social impact and just kind of impact on my life.

Dr. Paul Deglmann: Absolutely. We see that a lot. Very, very common.

Joslin: Four years ago, I came to you (Dr. Paul Deglmann) just kind of because I knew that that was kind of my last option. I didn't know what else to do. And I think six months after that, I felt like a completely different person.

It might have been sooner as well too, but I think the six month mark is really when I realized I felt completely different. I felt like a new human. I didn't even recognize myself because I had so much energy. I was so much happier. I kind of felt like I started to live my life again. My relationships with people, my life got better.

And now four years later, I'm still feeling great. I've definitely learned a lot about my body and what I can and cannot tolerate, what might kind of trigger some of those past symptoms and everything. But four years later, and I'm still going strong.

Dr. Paul Deglmann: When you look back at kind of what we did, obviously we did some dietary changes. We did some food testing. We did some stool testing, looked at the microbiome.

We found something like, okay, we got some bacteria overgrowth here. We got some gut rebuilding, repairing that we need to do here. Is there anything in the protocol, in the time that we spent together working with each other, is there anything that you felt was the most valuable?

Like, oh, we did this and that seemed to change, or was it accumulation of everything? Just kind of walk us through that a little bit.

Joslin: For me, the biggest one was all of the testing that needed to be done because from my background, I went through years and years and years of testing. I think it all started when I was five. So, and these were completely different tests that I've never run before.

And I kind of, I realized at that moment, I've never heard of these tests. I might as well do it. I've never done them.

So, what do I have to lose? So, I think running the test and really getting to the root of it all was probably the most beneficial. I mean, you're able to figure out what actually was wrong and how to fix it.

Honestly, it's probably all of it. Just the whole thing. It really, like I mentioned, I started feeling better probably six months after.

And I think I saw those changes in those six months because I did everything that I needed to do just to make sure I was able to be healthier and feel better and all of that. Instead of just doing a little bit here, a little bit there, I kind of, I jumped all in right away.

Dr. Paul Deglmann: That’s the biggest message that we want to try to share too, is that so many people are used to going to the doctor and getting so many tests done and they're told everything is normal, right? And there's nothing wrong or this is all we can do. And I think that with the testing that's limited, I mean, we have more access to testing because it is out of pocket.

It's not covered by insurance. These are things that are highly driven by nutrition and vitamins and minerals and different deficiency testing or whether it's food testing or the microbiome testing. And it's just a different way to look at it.

And it's, I always tell people, the more you test, the less you guess. The less you test, the more you guess, right? So the more testing we can do, the less guessing we have to do.

And we can really put together a really comprehensive protocol with diet lifestyle and nutritional supplementation to try to aid and target the individual person. What would you say to someone that is going through similar struggles in their life? They haven't found any help.

They've gone through a lot of testing. They're just looking to kind of, you know, is there anything out there for me? And a lot of people are losing hope.

They just don't know where to turn. Like, what would you say to someone that's considering working with Restorative Health Solutions?

Joslin: I guess I would just say you have to do it. I remember that feeling all too well. I have a lot of vivid memories from kind of feeling so hopeless and also seeing my family feeling hopeless as well too because they exhausted everything that they knew.

If you're at where I was at or even past that or right before that anything, you've already gone through so much testing and I never realized what life really was like. Feeling healthy, I always thought that life, I just would feel bad all the time. Here I am four years later, still feeling amazing. I don't know where I would be now. I mean, I found new passions from it. I got a job in the industry because I loved it so much.

I would just say give it a shot. If you've already exhausted all of your options, what else do you have left? You've got to just give it a shot.

I mean, I've changed a lot of my own family members, even friends, and they've all gone to see functional doctors, local to them. Some of them at Restorative as well too, but and they will all say the same thing and they all swear by it. So I would say you just have to do it and kind of push yourself even though you might be exhausted, but it'll be worth it in the end.

Dr. Paul Deglmann: What would you say about your overall experience working with Restorative Health Solutions, working with just the testing and the application to it, the communication, the front desk, just the logistics behind everything?

Joslin: Amazing. I honestly, coming from someone who, again, like I mentioned, probably started at the age of five, I think I was at doctor visits, seeing different doctors all the time, weekly, monthly. I traveled all over the United States to see different doctors, just to kind of stay in a room and spend five minutes with them and they didn't know anything about my history.

They didn't know anything about my family's history. My experience at Restorative was amazing. I mean, I think my first experience and my first appointment sitting down with you was, I think it was at least 30 minutes to an hour and after that and you went through everything that you could have ever asked.

You asked questions that I didn't realize were important until later. So my experience was amazing. I never really had great experiences at doctor's offices until I came to Restorative.

So it's all in all amazing.

Dr. Paul Deglmann: Awesome. Well, yeah, thanks for doing the interview. I really appreciate it.

We're trying to kind of spread some hope to people that are in similar positions that you used to be in and now you're feeling good. So we want to make sure that we get as many people, give as many people this message as possible. So thanks again for doing this.

Joslin: Yeah, of course. Thanks for asking me, but it's very important. I hope that it helps someone out there.

I feel amazing and very thankful for everything that you've done.

Beyond Gluten-Free: Dr. Paul's Insights and message for Celiac Patients Still Struggling with Symptoms

1. A gluten-free diet alone may not be enough - While avoiding gluten is essential, Joslin's case shows that some celiac patients may need a more comprehensive approach to fully recover. Simply eliminating gluten didn't resolve her symptoms.

2. Don't accept ongoing symptoms as normal - When Joslin continued experiencing severe symptoms despite following a gluten-free diet, she kept seeking answers. It's important not to accept persistent pain and discomfort as an inevitable part of celiac disease.

3. Consider comprehensive testing beyond standard celiac panels - The functional medicine approach used different tests than conventional medicine, looking at factors like:
- Food sensitivities beyond just gluten
- Gut microbiome analysis
- Bacterial overgrowth
- Nutritional deficiencies
- Vitamin and mineral levels

4. Recovery may require a multi-faceted approach customized to her by Dr. Paul - Joslin's improvement came from a combination of:
- Dietary modifications
- Gut repair protocols
- Addressing bacterial imbalances
- Understanding personal trigger foods
- Nutritional support

5. Full recovery is possible with the right protocol - Despite years of debilitating symptoms and being told by multiple doctors they couldn't help, Joslin achieved significant improvement within 6 months. Recovery is possible. Joslin went from being largely bedridden to feeling "like a completely different person" within 6 months on a proper Celiac protocol, and has maintained good health for four years since.

6. Don't give up if initial treatments aren't working - Even after being turned away from major medical centers like the Mayo Clinic, Joslin eventually found help. Her message is clear: "If you've already exhausted all of your options, what else do you have left? You've got to just give it a shot."

7. Life can return to normal - Joslin regained her ability to:
- Be physically active again
- Enjoy social events
- Have energy throughout the day
- Feel confident in her body
- Maintain healthy relationships

8. Understanding can lead to empowerment - Through proper approach to tacking celiac, Joslin learned to understand her body better, including what triggers her symptoms and how to maintain her health long-term.

9. The impact can be transformative - Not only did Joslin recover her health, but her experience led her to discover new passions and even pursue a career in the field. As she says, "I never realized what life really was like. Feeling healthy, I always thought that life, I just would feel bad all the time. Here I am four years later, still feeling amazing."

10. You're not alone in your struggle - Her story acknowledges the common frustrations many celiac patients face: multiple doctors, countless tests, and the emotional toll it takes on both patients and their families. But it also shows there can be light at the end of the tunnel. As someone who has personally overcome celiac disease, Dr. Paul understands that simply eliminating gluten isn't always enough. If you're still experiencing symptoms despite maintaining a strict gluten-free diet, schedule a complimentary consultation to explore additional solutions for your well-being.
